Happy Chuseok

Today begins Chuseok, or Harvest Moon Festival, in Korea. It is also sometimes referred to as the Korean Thanksgiving. Families get together to share food, honor their ancestors, and celebrate the Fall harvest. It is referred to as the biggest and most important holiday in Korea. People travel to their home towns and provinces to be with their families.

As with many holidays, food is at the center of the celebration. Traditional foods, such as rice cakes (Songpyeon), are served. I wish I could say these photos are MY Chuseok feast, but they are not. I included them to give you an idea of what people are eating in Korea today...and for the rest of the holiday weekend. I see some of my favorites on these tables...bulgogi, kimchi, mandu, pajeon...all very yummy!

Last year for Chuseok we attended a great local event. Unfortunately, I do not think they are having it this year. After Little D's nap today, I might take him to one of our local Korean grocery stores (after I make sure they are indeed open). We may have to settle for some take-out since I don't think I'll be pulling off one of these fantastic spreads myself today (I'm just not up for it). I do plan to read this book to him today. I hope to make this an annual tradition for us.

Embrace your families & loved ones, remember those who came before us, and enjoy the transition to Fall. Happy Chuseok!

I made an apple pie for our Korean neighbors today.

I saw a video of the flooding in Seoul from all the rain! An exciting holiday week.
