Neighborhood Friend

This is one of our local friends. She is a regular greeter on my neighborhood walks. Or...maybe she is a he? I'm not sure. Anyway...I call her Ginger. She follows me along on my walks for a good block or two, before turning back to her comfort zone. I've also seen Ginger hunt (yes...in my own backyard). She got a squirrel once...which I cannot say I was too sad to see. Squirrels are not my friends. We've had one get in our fireplace and others get into our attic, so I'm not too fond of them. As Carrie Bradshaw (of Sex and the City) once said, "A squirrel is just a rat with a better wardrobe." I couldn't agree more. The second hunt I witnessed distressed me. I heard a high-pitched "screaming" sound coming from the backyard. It sounded like a young child. I looked out and saw Ginger carrying a baby bunny in her mouth. OK, I may not be a squirrel lover, but what's not to love about baby bunnies? This is where I drew the line. I ran out the backdoor (looking like a lunatic, I'm sure)...screaming and clapping my hands to chase her out of our yard. If Ginger was going to kill that baby bunny, she wasn't going to do it on my turf. So...off she ran.
Ginger, I forgive you for doing what comes natural to you. Cats are great hunters after all. Your scars here and there (including missing the tip of your left ear) prove you have battled many a critter around here...maybe even some of the HUGE raccoons that roam around here at night. (Yes, I swear we do live in the city...with all this wildlife.) They are big thugs and I wouldn't mess with them if I were you. But...thanks for greeting me on my walks and for escorting me for a while.

Ours are evil...daring, sassy little devils! I think our squirrels should challenge your squirrels to a rumble...and we'll see who comes out the winner. (Either way...it will thin the population somewhat...a good thing.)

Hey! That's pretty cool you have a "buddy" for your walks! As for the squirrels, they were only put on earth to plant trees! They gather/steal nuts, dig them in the ground only to forget where they hid them. Come spring a baby tree is growing. Ours stay away from our patio. Perhaps they know Taz would be barking like crazy!

Humm, we have several outdoor kitties and no squirrels. Not sure if it is the kitties or a dislike of pine trees. We currently have two of our buddies hanging out in the "recovery room" in our basement. One used to be called Ginger (he is a red headed tiger) who is now Vinnie and Buff who is a buff colored tiger. We are still trying to find Buff a forever home, so if you know anyone please let us know. Kitties are the best pals.
